About the Game

The Beginning

  • Mahjong was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. It was introduced to America in the1920’s in NYC. Before long, different & conflicting rules surrounded gameplay and for the sake of uniformity, a group of mahjong enthusiasts met in NYC in 1937 to standardize the rules. Everyone started playing by the same rules and this is how the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) was formed. Each April the league publishes a new mahjong card with new hands that players use to play the game. This keeps the game fresh and fun. A bit of trivia: You will see the name of the game is spelled many ways, but historians say that the name mah-jongg means “sparrow” as the clicking of tiles sounds like the chatter of sparrows.
  • American Mahjong is played by four players…although there is a way to play with three. The game is like the Western card game “rummy”, and it is a game of skill, strategy, and luck.
  • In recent years American mahjong’s popularity has sky-rocketed! Many are either new to the game or in search of great instructors so they can learn to play.
  • Welcome…you are in the right place!

Testimonials

Relaxed & Welcoming

I’ve really enjoyed learning the game of Mahjong from Victoria. She breaks down the rules and strategies in a way that’s easy to follow, and she’s always patient when questions come up. The lessons are relaxed and welcoming, which makes it much easier to learn and actually enjoy the game.

Victoria also does a great job explaining the etiquette of Mahjong, which is something that really helps when you start playing with others. I appreciate how clearly she walks through everything and makes sure everyone feels comfortable, no matter their experience level.

I’ve been playing on and off for over a year now and feel confident playing with all players at any skill level. I highly recommend Victoria to anyone who wants to learn Mahjong or improve their skills!

Highly Qualified

Vee’s Mahjong class was OUTSTANDING! I knew nothing about Mahjong and had no idea that I should have even checked the qualifications of an instructor before I signed up for a class. Being “certified” in the Mahjong world today does not necessarily mean QUALIFIED as an expert mahjong player/instructor. I feel so fortunate that I was taught to play this game by an instructor who is highly qualified. She has played the game competitively for decades and loves to share the intricacies of mahjong with new people. This is not a new hobby for Vee, and I am

lucky I was in her class. Her passion for the history, etiquette, and complex strategy of the

game shined in her class. Vee made a very difficult game accessible and fun!

Vee encourages everyone in the class to learn the right way and has a very clear and sequenced structure to the course. Being taught by Vee will allow you to show up to any group or game and play with confidence of the basics of play. You will leave the course with a strong foundation for the game and a desire to continue developing your skill and strategy over a lifetime. This is not a game that can be conquered in a week, a month, or a year. It is truly something that you will continue learning over time. I love this game and appreciate the level of expertise Vee brought to the lessons.

Makes the Game Fun to Learn

Vee Necessary exhibits patience, skill, and knowledge when teaching Mahjong to beginners, as well as experienced players. I am amazed at how effectively she turns an intimidating game into a manageable one, enabling beginners to play confidently and veteran players to improve their strategies. Vee is patient with repetitive questions and provides a step-by-step approach. Vee has a thorough knowledge of Mahjong and explains the complex rules in an easy to understand manner, thereby reducing beginner anxiety.

Vee is fun, encouraging, and presents a welcoming atmosphere. Finally, I believe that those who attempt to learn Mahjong without lessons from a very experienced instructor are missing out. Lessons are a game-changer, providing a supportive, welcoming environment and a wonderful opportunity to build new friendships. I have personally grown very fond of the game and the social aspect has been incredibly fulfilling. Vee's enthusiasm for the game is contagious and I highly recommend her classes.

I participated in Vee’s 8+-hour Mahjong class and found it to be exceptional. She was very prepared, exceptionally organized and clearly understands not just how to play the game, but how to instruct others to play the game. She is an engaging & fun teacher. I left the sessions fully understanding how to play the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

A. Yes. Remember this four word mantra and you will always know who pushes next: PUSH LEFT...PLAY RIGHT. PUSH LEFT means that the next person to the LEFT of whomever is EAST gets to push their wall next. PLAY - or the process of picking & discarding - always goes to the RIGHT.

A. The definitive answer is NO. I tell my students to remember that you can never, ever, never, ever do that! LOL

Under no circumstances.

A. No, it is not. BUT IT IS BEST PRACTICE. If you want to play a smart and strategic game you rack every tile you pick from the wall! Strategically it STOPS the other players from "calling" the previously discarded tile from the discard pile. They may not have realized they needed it until after you picked your tile. If you are holding that tile in your hand when he/she "calls" for the previously discard tile, you must place the tile in your hand back into the wall in the exact same place you picked it from (and it hurts when it's a joker!!!) Then he/she gets to pick up the previously discarded tile. It could be his/her mahjong tile and you lose that hand because you didn't rack! Remember......................RACK! RACK! RACK!
